Kyle Zoellner, the 23 year old McKinleyville man accused of murdering HSU student David ‘Josiah’ Lawson pleaded not guilty to murder late this afternoon.
Zoellner also denied the District Attorney’s special allegation that he used a knife during the crime.
Although multiple eyewitnesses say race was a motivator in the attack, the DA did not charge Zoellner with a hate crime.
Judge Stephen Mock set a bail of $1 million. The preliminary hearing date is for May 1.

Kkklanlyville is still alive and well.
Your comment shows your ignorance. Why does everything have to be about race?
The issue of race is still alive and well, my dude. If you’re in the majority group in America, you don’t really have to think about it, and you have the pretty nice luxury of forgetting its there. If you’re accusing someone of ignorance, maybe consider your worldview and perspective is not the subjective reality? Maybe you’d think to look into a textbook and read about how (poorly) the US justice system responds to these murder cases?

Because when it comes to the interactions between black and white between folx in a white supremacist society, almost everything IS about race.
If you don’t want to talk about broader systems of oppression, and are only interested in the realities of this case, witnesses have confirmed that Josiah’s life was taken over racial profiling and white rage. Not to mention the victim was a young black man, and the murderer is a white male from a rural town where the Klan is literally active. I’m a white, middle class, cis gender woman with nothing to lose in this fight. Open your eyes, read a fucking book.
Lets Stop the Racism against students of color. Instead of looking at someone and judging them. Try getting to know them first. Encourage your friends not to judge others. Haven’t we all heard “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. I am of color and middle class. This situation about the students death should be eye opener and motivation to make a change on campus. I went to all white school and got discriminated before, it sucks. How would you feel if every time you went to work or to school, random people looked at you funny and said negative comments about your looks or their assumptions about you. Pretty annoyed or irritated or felt the need to avoid the situation right? At college, we can’t avoid it ,its our school just like it is yours.
