Cal Poly Humboldt Recreation Department offers a variety of drop-in sports for students. This month they’re featuring volleyball, basketball, badminton, softball, trivia nights and flag football. Karen Recino is the program assistant and overlooks intramurals, drop-in sports and skate nights. Drop-in sports are an easy way to relieve stress, get some exercise and make new friends.
“I believe coming out and playing sports is just such a great stress reliever for any of your school — like, your assignments, presentations, or especially when finals time comes around,” Recino said, “It’s just a way to come out and enjoy and have fun with friends.”
At drop-in volleyball, Elle Morris played in a game of five-on-five. It was her first time there and she enjoyed having the opportunity to play volleyball.
“I haven’t really been able to do volleyball since high school. So I thought it’d be a good way to get back into it,” Morris said.
In Morris’s opinion drop-in volleyball represented the highs of the sport without all the toxicity.
“It’s the best part of volleyball or sports, in my opinion, which is, the game and the companionship without so much competition that it’s, like, too much.”
They will transition into intramural sports in October where students and community members will create teams and compete once a week. There will be a final tournament for all the teams to compete in as well.
